Tattoo Process & Pain Expectations for our OKC Clients
Welcome to Onyx Rising Tattoo. We believe getting a tattoo should be an empowering, transparent, and comfortable experience. Whether you are preparing for your first piece or expanding a full sleeve, understanding the physical process, pain levels, and proper preparation ensures you get the best possible outcome for your skin.
Below is our comprehensive, artist-approved guide to what you can expect before, during, and after your session.
What Does a Tattoo Actually Feel Like?
Tattoo pain varies based on placement, technique, and individual tolerance. Rather than a sharp needle jab, most clients describe the sensation as a steady, localized irritation.
Line Work (Single or Fine Needle): Feels like a thin, continuous cat scratch or a sharp tracing on the top layer of skin.
Shading & Color Packing: Feels like a dull, warm scratch or a rough massage over a minor sunburn.
Vibration: You will feel the pulse of the tattoo machine radiating through nearby bones, particularly near joints or the ribs.
Pain Intensity Breakdown
Low Pain (Levels 1–3): Outer bicep, forearm, outer thigh, and calves. Ideal for first-timers; mild scratchiness that is easily manageable.
Moderate Pain (Levels 4–6): Upper back, shoulders, inner thigh, and chest. Moderate discomfort that requires steady breathing during long sessions.
High Pain (Levels 7–8): Ribs, stomach, inner bicep, knee caps, and spine. Sensitive areas with thinner skin or nearby bones resulting in an intense sensation.
Severe Pain (Levels 9–10): Sternum, neck, feet, armpits, and throat. Advanced placement requiring mental focus and structured breaks.
How We Prioritize Client Comfort at Onyx Rising
Our studio is built around health, safety, and physical comfort. Every station adheres to strict bloodborne pathogen protocols, hospital-grade sterilization, and single-use disposable needles.
During your session, we provide:
Private Screens: Available upon request if you prefer a secluded environment during application.
Client-Controlled Breaks: You can request a pause at any point during your session to stretch, hydrate, or catch your breath.
Sensory Accommodations: You are welcome to wear noise-canceling headphones, stream your own media, or bring a blanket.
Pre-Tattoo Protocol: Preparing Your Body
Proper preparation reduces skin sensitivity, minimizes bleeding, and helps ink settle cleanly into the dermal layer.
24 to 48 Hours Before Your Session
Hydrate Deeply: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment. Well-hydrated skin absorbs ink more effectively.
Moisturize the Area: Apply daily lotion to the target area (stop the day of the session). Do not shave the area yourself if you are prone to razor burn; your artist will prep the skin safely.
Avoid Alcohol & Aspirin: Blood thinners increase bleeding during the session, which can push ink out and prolong healing.
The Day of Your Appointment
Eat a Substantial Meal: Eat a high-protein, complex-carbohydrate meal 1 to 2 hours before arriving to maintain stable blood sugar levels and prevent lightheadedness.
Wear Appropriate Clothing: Choose loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the tattoo placement without pressing against fresh ink.
Numbing Creams: Our Studio Policy
While topical anesthetics can reduce surface discomfort, you must consult your artist before applying any numbing cream.
Skin Texture Changes: Certain over-the-counter creams alter the skin's elasticity, making fine-line work or smooth shading more difficult.
Duration: Numbing agents typically wear off after 60–90 minutes. When they wear off, pain perception can spike suddenly.
Approved Brands: If you require numbing due to pain anxiety or low tolerance, contact your artist at Onyx Rising Tattoo in advance so we can recommend a safe, professional-grade product that will not compromise your final artwork.
What Happens During the Session?
Consultation & Stencil: We finalize placement, sizing, and check the fit in the mirror together before any tattooing begins.
Skin Preparation: The artist performs an antiseptic cleanse and a precision shave to ensure a smooth, sterile work surface.
Linework Application: Core outlines are applied with clean, steady breaks throughout the process.
Shading & Color: Depth, tone, and texture are added to bring the design to life.
Cleanse & Bandaging: Medical-grade protective wrap is applied along with clear aftercare instructions.
Fresh vs. Healed Expectations
A fresh tattoo is an open surface abrasion. Over the first 2 to 4 weeks, your tattoo will undergo several distinct healing stages:
Days 1–3 (Fresh & Inflamed): The design will appear bright, dark, and slightly raised. Minor redness and clear fluid weeping are completely normal.
Days 4–10 (Flaking & Peeling): The top layer of skin will flake off similar to a sunburn. Do not pick or scratch at flakes, as this removes ink before it sets.
Days 14–30 (Settling): A thin layer of new skin forms over the pigment, making it appear slightly muted or cloudy. Once fully healed, the vivid tone returns.
